Notes from the Rectory

Dear All

January is over and another month has begun.  January although often thought of as a quiet month had its moments.  Some happy some sad.  Sad because we heard of the death of someone who I understand was well known in all of the parishes.  He was church warden in Lewannick for many years, Maurice Holden.  He will be sadly missed.

Happy for me because most of you will know I went off to Durham to graduate from the university with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology.

We had a really enjoyable Praise service in Lewannick with prayer, praise and a time of reflection on psalm 139, in an informal way,

In February, we come into the start of Lent, yet it seems we have only just finished celebrating Christmas.  Lent is traditionally a time of giving things up as many people do.  They give up things they enjoy such as chocolate, coffee, or watching TV, but we can also give up some of our time to help those in need, or make a special time for prayer or quiet time to be with God.  You might find that you enjoy that time more than chocolate.

There are several events happening throughout lent and Easter some of which are in this bulletin, but do look out for posters advertising what is happening in the churches.  First of course everyone is invited to the Rectory for Pancakes on the 13th, Robin will be making them from 5pm to 9pm.  Our Lent course starts on 21st February again at the Rectory unless, praise God, we have more than 10 people and then we will need a bigger venue.  There is also a Quiz night at South Petherwin Hall on 23rd.  Why not see if you can make up a team from your church or just come along and join with others to make a team.  All these things are noted in the pages of this bulleting so please put them in your diary.

Lent is a time of preparation like advent which is indicated in the colours of the church vestments, purple or deep blue.  We remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross and his terrible death, but we also remember that wonderful time of his resurrection in our celebrations on Easter Sunday.  Preparing us for that time when he will come again in Glory and the Hope of Eternal life through him, purchased for us on that cross.

Love and prayers

Heather.

News from the Parishes

Please note change to Knit and Natter meeting – for Jan/Feb/Mar only meeting on 3rd Tuesdays and meeting in The Manor

There was a very beautiful service at St Melanus Church in St Mellion on the afternoon of the 14 January, which saw the commissioning of 8 new Local Worship Leaders. Our own Clare Beacham, being among them so we all look forward to seeing Clare leading worship throughout the Benefice and wish her all God’s blessing for the future.

Seen here proudly holding her commissioning certificate.

Active Prayer

Sometimes we cannot pray in words

For anguish in our hearts

Can only lift our two hands

And God will play his part

He is forever waiting there

For us to take a lead

He reads what’s in our hearts and minds

And what we really need

So do not think He does not care

Or that you are alone

For when you feel a need for Him

You’ll know that He’s at home.
